Bison Roundup Set to Begin at Theodore Roosevelt National Park

MEDORA, ND – A bison roundup is scheduled for the week of October 16 at the North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

For safety reasons, this operation will be closed ot the public, but media are invited to cover the story. Most of the roundup will take place October 17 through 19. The best photographic opportunities will likely be on October 18 and 19. In order to ensure human and animal safety, media representatives must be escorted while at the site. It is recommended that you call the park at 701-623-4466 after 8:00 a.m. MDT on the day you plan to attend the roundup before leaving your office to ensure the operation has not been postponed or changed due to weather or other issues. Moon Rocks to Be Featured at the Fourth Annual Dakota Nights Astronomy Festival

MEDORA, ND: Theodore Roosevelt National Park and Historic Medora invite curious minds of all ages to celebrate North Dakota’s dark night skies. Park rangers, astronomers, and space enthusiasts of all types will gather for the Fourth Annual Dakota Nights Astronomy Festival Friday, September 23 through Sunday, September 25.

“People have been studying the night skies for millennia,” said Chief of Interpretation Eileen Andes. “Dakota Nights celebrates the beauty and fragility of this awe-inspiring resource and makes it accessible and fun for people of all ages. You don’t have to be an astronomy expert; the festival has something for everyone.”

Daytime activities include model rocket building and launching, a “build your own telescope” workshop, “sun gazing,” solar system hikes, family astronomy activities, and hourly presentations in Dickinson State University’s Discovery Dome. As a special offering this year, the park is proud to host NASA lunar samples! Visitors are welcome to enjoy presentations by nationally recognized speakers at 7:00 p.m. MDT each evening at the Cottonwood Campground amphitheater. Afterwards, astronomers will reveal the mysteries of the universe while star gazing in a field of more than a dozen telescopes at Peaceful Valley Ranch. READ MORE »

Annual Dakota Nights Astronomy Festival to Be Held at Theodore Roosevelt National Park and Historic Medora

MEDORA, ND – The fourth annual Dakota Nights Astronomy Festival will be held September 23 – 25 in Theodore Roosevelt National Park and Historic Medora.

This year’s guest speakers are Dr. Tyler Nordgren, professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Redlands, artist, photographer, astronomer, and night sky ambassador; Dr. Joe Shaw, Director of the Optical Technology Center at Montana State University; and Dr. Paul Barnhart of the Department of Natural Sciences at Dickinson State University.

Daytime activities include model rocket building and launching; programs inside Dickinson State University’s Discovery Dome, solar viewing, solar system hikes, telescope building, and family activities. NASA lunar samples (moon rocks) will be on display. Evening star gazing with a field of telescopes manned by park rangers and astronomers will take place at historic Peaceful Valley Ranch in the park. Bison Abound in Theodore Roosevelt National Park

President Obama just named the bison as America’s National Mammal! Now bison aren’t nearly as prevalent today as they used to be during Theodore Roosevelt’s time in Dakota Territory, but you can still see plenty of them in his namesake national park, Theodore Roosevelt National Park — the backyard of Medora, North Dakota and the New York Times’ #5 place to visit in 2016!
